The Swiss health insurance system - it pays to compare

The health insurance system in Switzerland consists of two parts: basic insurance and various supplementary insurances.

Basic health insurance is compulsory for all Swiss residents. It ensures basic medical care in the event of illness, accident and maternity. The benefits are prescribed by law and are therefore identical for all health insurance plans.

We offer you basic insurance in a standard variant and various special insurance forms with lower premiums. In the standard variant, the deductible rate is CHF 300 for adults and CHF 0 for children. To save on premiums, choose a higher deductible rate or limit your choice of service provider. We offer you several contract models here.

With voluntary supplementary insurance, you can insure important services in Switzerland and abroad that are not covered at all or only partially by basic insurance.

Health insurance in detail

Basic insurance is compulsory for all persons resident in Switzerland from birth. Anyone moving to Switzerland from abroad has three months to decide on an insurance plan. No basic insurer may refuse a customer on the basis of his or her state of health. Everyone must be accepted, regardless of age, sex or medical condition. With the deductible rate (cost sharing of the insured person during a calendar year), the customer can adjust the basic insurance to his needs. A low deductible rate is recommended for insured persons with high health costs; with a high deductible rate, healthy persons can benefit from a lower insurance premium.

Supplementary insurance supplements the benefits of basic insurance in a wide range of areas. Each provider offers different insurances and coverages, resulting in a wide variety of benefits and prices. Frequently insured here are extended coverages for stays abroad, costs for specialists, alternative medicine or preventive examinations as well as vaccinations. Likewise, many supplementary insurances cover part of the usually immensely high costs for corrections to the position of children's teeth; here, the comparatively low monthly premium is almost always worthwhile. With the VVG, there is no compulsory admission, so it is advisable to take out supplementary insurance when you are young and healthy, as otherwise there may be exclusions or even rejections.

Since there are sometimes massive price differences in the area of basic insurance and often large differences in benefits in supplementary insurance, an independent comparison of health insurance is usually highly recommended.

Assumption of medical and treatment costs in the event of an accident

Private accident insurance is the ideal supplement to social insurance and protects you against the financial consequences of accidents - whether at work, in your leisure time, on the road, while travelling, doing sports or playing games. It covers treatment by a doctor or specialist, the cost of medicines and even special medications that are not covered by health insurance. You are insured worldwide for stay and care in the private ward of a hospital. Transportation and travel costs are also covered.

After an insured accident we also pay for necessary cosmetic operations and the use of necessary domestic help.

The health insurance supports you in getting well again under the best possible conditions. It ideally supplements your existing compulsory basic insurance with a health insurance company. In the event of illness, you will receive daily benefits to secure your income - this is just as important for employees as it is for self-employed persons or students. You determine the amount and the waiting period until the insurance benefits start to accrue yourself. You will receive a daily hospital allowance if you have to go to hospital or to a health resort because of illness - completely independent of the actual expenses per day of stay. This allows you to benefit from additional benefits that are not covered by the basic insurance.

Insured persons up to the age of 26 can also take out a disability lump sum to alleviate the financial consequences of a serious illness. A lump sum is paid out when this drastic situation occurs. If the impairment of health is particularly distressing, immediate assistance of 10 percent of the agreed sum insured is paid.
